Depth formula

Axial depth = (large diameter − small diameter) / (2 × tan(included angle / 2)). The formula treats the feature as a centered, ideal cone.

Worked example

A 90° countersink increasing from 6 mm to 10 mm has an ideal axial depth of 2 mm because tan(45°) = 1.

Assumptions and limits

  • The included angle must be between 0° and 180°, and the large diameter must exceed the small diameter.
  • The formula assumes coaxial diameters and a perfect conical surface without tool-tip flats, runout, edge breaks, or burrs.
  • Actual depth may differ because of cutter geometry, wear, material, measurement method, and tolerance.
